TOK? Low-key Philosophy? Epistemology? However you choose to define TOK, I realise that it is not popular among IB students. Yes, it is interesting but it is really necessary?. I mean, when you have a huge workload, hOw dO yOU kNoW WhAt YoU kNOw? seems irrelevant. Surprisingly, IBDP core ideals include TOK. So why would an "acclaimed" academic institution see it fit to include such a topic into their core syllabus? Is IB trying to monetise us for money? Is TOK a scam? Actually..yes, wait..I mean no. TOK is important, TOK is relevant, TOK is necessary and TOK is the key to a future (IB totally did not pay me to say this). I love TOK as a subject, not because it makes me feel special or anything but I have recognised the benefits of having such a subject included in the Diploma Program. In a nutshell, here are some reasons why you should take TOK seriously;
TOK, is an important subject in an age riddled with fake news, misinformation, preconceived biases and an opinion-based political, social and cultural institution. It really helps us recognise that truly, seeing is not believing..yes, I said it. I am not saying that TOK immediately helps individuals stop the pandemic in age of "them versus us" but I am saying, to put things into perspective, it does help confront our biases and judgments. It opens a way for us to explore our own knowledge and understand the opinion of others. Open-mindedness is important. This fosters community, understanding and maybe, it is what we need to realise that truth can be manipulated.
"The point of modern propaganda isn't only to misinform or push an agenda. It is to exhaust your critical thinking, to annihilate truth." ~ Garry Kasparov.
So simply put, with TOK you become less of an ignorant person and the world becomes an "okay" place.
2. TOK is a means of self-reflection. Guys, I cannot tell you of all the people who believe ideals just because a majority of their friends or family believe it. TOK lets you really self-develop, it asks the questions, why do I believe what I believe. We should never be afraid to question ourselves. No one is asking you to go mad trying to answer all of life's questions, but you become less of shadow of someone belief.
3. TOK helps you pass your IB. Seriously, like, TOK makes you more of a critical thinker, you are not just content with consuming knowledge, you want to know the how's, why's and what's if of every mathematical concept, chemical equation or conspiracy theory. It makes you a better learner and a critical thinker. So yh, TOK is not a waste of time.
Hear me out, if I didn't convince you, that's okay but truly ask yourself, Am I going to let the opportunity to be a less ignorant person pass me by? Am I going to be just content with following the majority?
This quote is actually by an IB student for her TOK essay( She's my friend), basically she says it all.
